The swim team made their season debut on Friday, December 2nd against Riverside. The final score was 395 to 173 for Riverside.
The Vikings gave solid performance all around. Sophomore Sean Conway made State cuts in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly. The boys 200-yard medley relay team of Conway, Mason Van Tassel, Cole Haines, and Tito Alcazar came within six seconds of qualifying for States as well. Sophomore Chloe Wakefield gave a strong performance in the 200-yard freestyle despite losing her goggles early in the race.
Junior Wyatt Serafin gave an excellent performance in his 50-yard freestyle, posting a 27.3 despite having no flip turn or previous competition experience (average times for first-time swimmers in the 50-yard free range from 33-40 seconds). Freshman Brandi Baker took first in her 500 freestyle, and junior Cole Haines set a new personal best in the same event. Senior Tito Alcazar set a new personal best in the 200-yard I.M. and took first place in his 100-yard breastroke.
“We had a couple things that didn’t go quite as planned, but we still had a fantastic start to the season,” Coach Sweatte said.
