Just in time for Halloween, Netflix has released a new horror/thriller called “In the Tall Grass.” The title itself is intriguing. What’s so scary about grass? Or what exactly is lurking in it?

The movie is based on a novel written by Stephen King and Joe Hill. If it involves Stephen King, then one can already assume it’s going to be all kinds of creepy.

The story begins with siblings Cal and Becky. The brother and sister pair are traveling from Kansas to California. While stopping for a break, they hear a young boy calling out for help, his cries coming from the grass. They both decide to head into the vast field of green. After all, it’s just grass, right?

However, things take a turn when they realize that they are stuck in a moving maze of tall grass. In the most chilling scene, they both jump into the air and wave at each other. The second time they jump, they discover that they have somehow been moved thousands of miles. Losing each other in the maze of grass is only the beginning of a series of unexplainable and eerie events. Cal and Becky eventually meet the young boy calling for help, Tobin. He is covered in dirt and seems almost possessed by the grass, which he refers to as a paranormal creature. The siblings then meet Tobin’s dad, Ross, who poorly hides his inherent evilness. Tobin’s mom and Becky’s ex-boyfriend are the only other characters introduced, but the story is nonetheless creepy because of its two main antagonists—the grass and Ross.

As the story unravels, things only get weirder. “In the Tall Grass” is a movie that cannot be analyzed through a wikipedia summary or movie review. It is a film that you have to experience yourself. I was entertained throughout the movie. I was constantly thinking about what I would do if I was stuck in a labyrinth of moving grass with possessed people running amok.

However, the plot was full of cliffhangers and unexplained occurrences that viewers have to unfortunately fill in themselves. I had tons of questions running through my mind after the film ended.

Ultimately, a movie review does not do “In the Tall Grass” justice. With its endless plot twists and numerous accounts of gut-wrenching gore, viewers are left to question everything they just watched.
