“Dancing with the Stars” may be taking the “stars” too leniently in light of the newest season. Welcome back to the Midweek Movie Marathon, where today we’ll be talking about a TV show, a con artist and “Dancing with the Stars.”
Let’s get into it.
The newest season of DWTS (Dancing with the Stars) has a host of fun new contestants: Olympians Stephen Nedoroscik and Illona Maher, and celebrities such as Tori Spelling. But a new, much less welcome face is gracing the dancefloor, con artist Anna Delvey (or Anna Sorokin as is her real name). Sorokin is planning on competing while on house arrest with special permission and an ankle monitor.
Now you may be wondering, “why is a con artist on Dancing with the Stars? Who is she anyway?”
Well, my lovely reader, let us go through the story of Anna Sorokin and the TV show, “Inventing Anna.”
Sorokin rose to fame in 2017 when she pretended to be a German heiress named Anna Delvey and conned her way into the New York elite. She swindled banks and hotels and lived a lavish lifestyle that was ultimately unsustainable. She was caught during a sting operation that brought her fraud into the limelight and made headlines across the nation. As a result, producer and screenwriter Shonda Rimes decided to make a show; enter “Inventing Anna.”
“Inventing Anna” is a TV mini-series on Netflix that is a dramatized version of Anna Sorokin’s con that spans from the origins through the operation and ultimately the reveal. It goes through her “friends” and the businesses who were wrapped up in the lie. The show is compelling, it has many unique twists and turns that will keep you thinking about it long after you finish the show. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of “The Dropout” or “Fyre.”
Speaking of TV shows, DWTS made a horrible decision in choosing Anna Sorokin. Among all the other stars of the season the inclusion of an attention hungry con artist shouldn’t be one of them.
Anna Sorokin is not a star, she has hurt many businesses and was convicted of grand larceny. She isn’t a pop icon, she is a felon, plain and simple, and should be spending her time in prison rather than prancing about on national television.
