Introduced for the first time this year, the Olympics are now taking place in the choir and orchestra rooms here at Valley.
This year-long project came from a choir director workshop Choir and Orchestra director Kelly Holowecki attended at the start of the year.
Essentially, everyone in choir and orchestra are broken into teams. Some are assigned groups by section and some are mixed with different instruments. Together they will rally behind a country, one of their own creation or one that already exists. Students designed flags that will represent them for the rest of the year.
“We’ll do little mini music games throughout the year that they score points on. At the end of the year, whoever has the most points from choir and the most points from orchestra, they’ll get a prize,” Holowecki said.
As these musical olympics are not in full swing yet, games have not started. However, games for choir could include competitions about who’s group representative can sing the highest note. Orchestra games could consist of conducting two different patterns at the same time to test coordination, or who can play the fastest scale. It could even be as simple as both classes reviewing for upcoming tests.
As the year goes on, and teams accumulate points, be sure to keep an eye on the competition.
