Lantern flies, an invasive species of moth, have been a recent topic of discussion as sightings have become more frequent and people have been going out of their way to kill them. Lantern flies are harmful to the environment, but to humans they are harmless. Unlike lantern flies, however, there are animals that can deal serious damage to humans in Virginia.
When thinking of dangerous animals, people typically think about bigger animals like wolves or bears, but the most dangerous animal isn’t like that at all. In actuality, the common mosquito is the deadliest creature in the world. The mosquito is responsible for more human casualties than any other living thing, resulting in over 700,000 deaths worldwide each year. This may be surprising to some since mosquitos are pretty common, but some can carry diseases like malaria that can cause serious harm.
While not a vicious animal by itself, deer can kill hundreds every year due to car related incidents. Since deer are prey animals by nature, they will sometimes stop in the middle of the road out of freight when cars are approaching or try to cross the street just as a car is passing. Because of this, there will sometimes be traffic signs warning of deer crossing in roads near or in wooded areas.
In addition, some of the most dangerous snakes in the world live in Virginia. For example the Timber Rattlesnake’s venom is highly deadly. While not particularly aggressive, they will bite if they feel threatened or if you get too close to it. If bitten, one should seek medical attention immediately as its venom acts quickly.
Most deadly animals aren’t a big issue; not every Rattlesnake bite carries venom and most mosquitoes don’t carry any diseases. Still, people should be careful when observing these animals, or even just being outside.
