Decided earlier in the week than expected, Donald Trump is the projected winner of the presidential election and is set to be inaugurated into the White House in Jan. The current electoral vote comparison is 277 for former President Trump and 224 for Vice President Kamala Harris. This Trump lead is likely to significantly increase as swing states are called – which are all leaning in his favor.
Trump will make history as the first felon to ever assume presidential office due to his trial convictions earlier this year on top of his already record-breaking two impeachments. He managed this victory by overperforming in areas of Latino and young voters and consistently holding on to his base of white men without college degrees.
“I woke up, and the first thing I did was check the results,” junior Richie Ring said. “And then I was like, ‘What the heck?’ Like, I hoped for the best, and then the worst came, and I was really upset about it.”
On the other hand, Harris largely underperformed in nearly all areas. We see her performing worse in swing states that Joe Biden previously won such as Georgia and most importantly, Pennsylvania. We also saw a shockingly close race in Virginia, an assumed strong blue state. Though Harris ended up winning Virginia, it took much longer than expected, showcasing her trend of slipping nearly nationwide.
Trump’s promise to improve the economy in an election where it commonly ranked as the #1 issue was the strongest part of his campaign. His big question is “are you better off than you were four years ago?” And for the majority of Americans, the answer to that question is no.
