On Oct. 1, an email was sent out to LCPS parents about changing the bell schedule.
The email contained a link to a survey that asked about start and end times in the day, holiday break lengths, current holidays, year lengths, etc.
The survey closed on Oct. 15 and everyone has an opinion.
Senior Gabby Cevallos says she would prefer an earlier day which would help when she has gymnastics over the winter.
“I could have more time after and get a lot of work done,” Cevallos said. “I’d be less stressed out and get more sleep, because I don’t get a lot of sleep during the season.”
“I like how it is, because we don’t get out too late, but I wish we got out earlier, because the day is wasted,” sophomore Mia Palacios said.
Many students feel if the morning started earlier there would be more time after school to do things like sports, extracurriculars and homework.
However, some students prefer the way it is because they are less tired in the morning from getting more sleep then they would if school started earlier.
“I live further away than most people so I prefer the way it is because if it was earlier I’d have to wake up really early,” sophomore Aashmita Tariyal, an IB transfer student, said.
Senior Avery Ramsey believes that an earlier day could benefit students that have jobs like her. She also feels that a calendar change and more days off would help so she could pick up more shifts on off days.
“During the week, if I had more days off, then I would be able to pick up more hours, and I would just get more hours,” Ramsey said.
Some people feel we would benefit from a calendar change that goes beyond more or less days off. History teacher Matthew Poth believes that we should have year round school.
“I am a huge proponent of year round schooling,” Poth said. “We get the same amount of days off. It’s just broken up. And so think about how we just had a week off at the end of the first period. And were much more energized, and we’re going to come back and want to work harder. And we’re a little bit refreshed, but we don’t have that long two and a half month break.”
Poth also believes that the day should start earlier, with elementary school and high school times being switched, making high school start at 7:30 and elementary school start at 9:30.
While there’s no guarantee that anything will change, the school board is trying to accommodate students and families and their preferences.
