Chase Loftis recently committed to Shepherd University where he will further his athletic career as a linebacker.
“I chose this school because of the opportunity it gave me to play at a D2 level,” Loftis said. “And because of their winning culture.”
Loftis said the hardest part of the recruiting process was trying to balance everything with academics and determining the pros and cons of each college.
“It was a lot of communication with coaches and traveling to meet them to see the campus and facilities,” Loftis said.
Senior Heath Fetterolf said that Loftis not only improves himself, but improves his teammates around him.
“He was really helpful for everyone, but especially with the younger guys telling them what to do,” Fetterolf said. “He became a really big presence on the field.”
For some athletes, jersey numbers can hold significance. Especially when you’ve had the same one for years.
“Right now I wear 37,” Loftis said. “One of the senior linebackers two years ago gave it to me and I’ve stuck with it.”
Many of Loftis’ teammates raved about how aggressive he is and how much of a leader he is; specifically with their defensive line.
“This year, he got more vocal on the field, and especially in the linebacker position you need to be vocal,” Fetterolf said. “He made plays on and off the field and so when he stepped in that role it was really helpful for all the guys who are playing defense.”
Sophomore Braeden Mandichak said that Loftis showed perseverance and leadership throughout the whole season.
“He takes initiative and communicates very well,” Mandichak said.
Loftis has been playing football since second grade and his dad has been his biggest supporter every step of the way.
“My dad has been there for me on both my good and bad days,” Loftis said. “I wouldn’t be where I am without him.”
Having coached Loftis for four years, Assistant coach Joshua Spring said that he noticed positive traits of Loftis, as a player and person.
“He’s kind of quiet off the field,” Spring said. “But his work ethic and his playing ability speaks volumes on the field.”
