Scientists estimate that there are about 8.7 million species of animal on the planet, and all of them have varying features. There are different levels of intelligence among each species, meaning some will naturally end up smarter than others.
From mammals to mollusks, some species evolved to be much smarter, on a level not often seen in the animal kingdom, such as the case with chimpanzees, dolphins, and octopi. Making tools and solving puzzles are just some of the feats of smarts these animals have.
Incredibly close to humans evolutionarily, Chimpanzees are apes that live in large communities. They use a wide variety of gestures and vocalizations to communicate with each other. They can recognize their own reflections, retain and use information that they have learned similarly to humans and have even been seen using tools. They use rocks to crush nuts and poke sticks into termite nests to catch and eat termites.
In addition to Chimpanzees, dolphins are another animal with high intelligence. Despite looking like fish, dolphins are actually classified as mammals and they are a lot smarter than you might think.
Like Chimps, they can recognize themselves in the mirror and also use tools. Dolphins will cover their snouts in marine sponges to protect them on the seafloor when foraging. They also experience complex emotions, including empathy, and may even help protect fellow dolphins who are injured.
Unlike the previous two species, Octopi are mollusks whose anatomy are very different from ours. They have three hearts and a cluster of neurons that can act independently in each of their arms. They are famous for being able to escape tight enclosures when in captivity, and have been observed using coconut shells as protective armor. On top of this, they can open jars, navigate mazes and build little shelters from shells, rocks and other items they can find.
The animal kingdom is filled with surprise geniuses, with problem solving capabilities and self awareness that can leave even scientists stunned.
