It’s finally here. The much anticipated FNaF film hits theaters today after eight years since its initial announcement.
Let’s take a step back for a second, you may be wondering, “What is FNaF?”
Well, my dear reader, let me guide you through the complex and contradictory game that is Five Nights at Freddy’s.
What is FNaF?
Five Nights at Freddy’s is a horror video game released in 2014 by indie horror producer Scott Cawthon. Immediately taking the world by storm, the franchise expanded into nine main games and four spin off games, even expanding into virtual reality and augmented reality technology.
The narrative of Five Nights at Freddy’s is different across all games and the underlying story is debated by many. The first game follows this basic premise: you are a security guard named Mike Schmidt employed at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria.
The restaurant is home to four possessed animatronic animals: Foxy, Bonnie, Chica and the titular Freddy Fazbear. There have been murders at the pizzeria in the 80’s and now the animatronics are out for revenge. Mike tries to survive five nights at the pizzeria with the constant attacks from the animatronics.
The rest of the franchise follows a similar premise, with the exception of new characters, plot details and occasionally a completely new environment.
Buried within the game is the character of William Afton (also known as Purple guy). Afton is one of the co-creators of Freddy Fazbear’s and is credited with building some of the animatronics. William Afton is most important, however, as the murderer of the kids in the first game and the reason for the animatronics’ anger.
The Plot of the Film
Now that the story is established, what is to come of the movie?
From what we can tell from the trailer, it seems to follow the plot of the first game by including Mike Schmidt as the main protagonist. Schmidt, portrayed by “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson, is the new security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s. He is employed by an unknown person, who is speculated to be Phone Guy, played by Mathew Lillard of “Scream” fame. Once Schmidt takes on the security guard role, he brings a little girl with him, who discovers the animatronics on the stages. The trailers place a lot of focus on people unwittingly unleashing the animatronics.
My Predictions
Onto my predictions for the movie.
I believe that Mike or the little girl will unleash the animatronics and that will be the center of the film. I also believe that the movie will put great focus on the ghost children from the 80’s who will help Mike defeat a character from FNaF 3, Springtrap.
Springtrap appears in the trailer and is a consistent villain throughout FNaF 3, and FNaF VR. It is possessed by the spirit of William Afton the villain from the games and the original tormentor of the children in the 80’s.
I predict there will be an appearance of another character who isn’t in the trailers, Golden Freddy. Since Springtrap is included, Golden Freddy would make sense to include as well, given that they came out together and are always featured together. Golden Freddy would also make sense as it appears as an easter egg in the first game.
Overall, I have high expectations for this movie and, if it’s anything like the game, it will be chock full of horror and thrills. Let’s see what this movie has in store.
