So we’re an IB Certified School: What does that mean?

On Oct. 30, 2023, Loudoun Valley became an International Baccalaureate (IB) World Certified school, along with Heritage High School. Starting the 2024-25 school year, students will be able to take specialized IB courses and pursue an IB Diploma.

Although Valley earned certification in late 2023, IB Coordinator Michael Skvarch has been preparing for this change since last school year, alongside a pedagogical leadership team of teachers training to teach IB courses.

“This is just the start,” Skvarch said. “Every year, we’re going to be adding a little bit more.”

This program promises shifts throughout the building, both academically and socially, for both students and staff. With all these changes, students and parents alike find themselves asking: What does that mean?

Ash Woerner, Opinion Editor
My name is Ash Woerner (they/them) and I’m a junior here at Valley. I’m starting my second year on staff as an opinion editor!

Outside of school and its related activities, I enjoy indulging various obsessions, including my current fixation on British horror podcast, "The Magnus Archives." I have a deep passion and affection for aesthetics, tea and the oxford comma. I’m hopeful for what the future holds for me here at The Viking!
