Apple’s Macbook Neo may be nearing the end of its run as reports suggest the company is running low on the chips used to power this device. With supply becoming more limited, many people believe Apple could discontinue the laptop rather than continue production.
The MacBook Neo was priced so low because they used recycled A19 iPhone chips. It did not cost them much to make. Now that the chips are running low, it would be an inconvenience to make new chips. That would cost them more than they profit.
The MacBook Neo gained attention for offering a more budget-friendly option compared to their other Macbook’s such as the Air or the Pro. The low price gained the attention of a lot of students who were looking for an everyday computer without the high cost.
“The MacBook Neo was a product that felt realistic for students who were on a budget.” sophomore Uma Kartha said.
Even though the Neo is possibly coming to an end, Apple is undergoing another major shift. Recently Apple appointed a new CEO, John Ternus. He was the Senior Vice President of the hardware department team. This could possibly lead to a bigger focus on new lines and new product designs, including budget-friendly hardware.
“This could possibly mean Apple will make new products, and not be repetitive,” junior Alia McElroy said. “This could be a big change for Apple.”
Sophomore Edem Kuadey noted the reason why the Neo was so popular was because of the price and quality.
“People want the quality Apple offers,” Kuadey said. “But they also want reasonable prices that go along with that.
If the MacBook Neo is discontinued, it will close that chapter of the budget-friendly computer, but perhaps could lead to opportunities to open a new one. For consumers looking for decently priced technology, it could be a new era for Apple.
“Maybe Apple is going to reset,” Lorelai Oechslein said. “Almost like a new beginning for them.”
