If you will be 18 by the Nov. 5 presidential election, this is for you. In order to vote, you must be registered. If you’re planning to vote in person on Election Day, the online registration deadline is Oct. 15.
In order to register, you must have a DMV driver’s license or state-issued ID, be a U.S. citizen and a Virginia resident, be 18 before the election and not be convicted of a felony.
If you will be absent on Election Day, you can also apply to vote absentee by mail. The deadline for this is Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. Once you receive your absentee ballot, follow the instructions to fill out the ballot and how to return it.
You can drop off your absentee ballot at your local registrar’s office, ballot drop- off location or send it back by mail. If you’re sending it back by mail, USPS recommends you send it at least a week before Election Day.
Once Election Day arrives, if you’re voting on time in person, you will be able to vote from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at your polling location. In order to find your polling location, check the registered voter portal. You will not be able to vote if you go to the wrong polling location. You will need to provide one form of ID to vote, but proof of registration is not required.
